LEMU is governed by a seven-member board of directors, composed of experts who guide the strategic direction of LEMU’s interventions and play an oversight role in the overall management of the institution; below are the members of the Board of Directors
Ms. Chelimo is the Board Chairperson for Land and Equity Movement Uganda, where she offers strategic leadership with a team of multi-professional Board Members towards supporting vulnerable communities in Uganda to secure their land
rights and achieve sustainable and productive land use.
She is also the Board Chairperson of Uganda Community Based Association for Women and Children, the Resource Person for Land Justice and Focal Person for the Democratic Processes Sub-Programme at the Governance and Security
Programme Secretariat formerly known as the Justice, Law and Order Sector Secretariat based at the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs in Uganda.
Ms. Chelimo is an advocate of the High Court with over 17 years working experience and she holds a Master’s Degree in Human Rights, Social Justice and Development from the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Bachelor of Laws from Uganda Christian University, a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre, Post Graduate Diploma in Project Planning and Management from Uganda
Management Institute and additional qualifications in Programming/Planning, Performance Management and Monitoring.
Ms. Chelimo has vast experience in human rights, land governance, alternative dispute resolution, advocacy, policy reforms and implementation of access to justice reforms, and Programme/Project Planning and Management.
Ms. Chelimo offers free legal advisory services to her community and is passionate about access to justice and human rights protection and promotion for all most especially the marginalized, poor and vulnerable persons in society, and environmental protection and ecological safeguarding
Caroline Nabatanzi is the Board Treasurer of Land and Equity Movement in Uganda (LEMU), an Auditor by Profession and a Certified Accountant with over 17 years of experience in Accounting and Auditing. She currently serves in the Internal Audit Department at Uganda Management Institute.
Caroline brings broad expertise in financial management, oversight, compliance, and risk management, playing a key role in strengthening accountability, transparency, and sound financial decision-making within the organization. She has successfully led and conducted numerous audits and is passionate about business finance and NGO accounting, with a vision to become a leading advisor in the field.
Beyond her professional work, Caroline is an entrepreneur, counsellor, and dedicated community advocate, committed to empowering girls and women.
Jimmy Spire Ssentongo is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at Makerere University, specialising in Ethics and Identity Studies. He has served on the Board of LEMU since April 2024. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University for Humanistic Studies (Holland), a MSc in Education for Sutainability at London South Bank University and was a Research Fellow at Centre of African Studies at the University of Cambridge.
Dr. Ssentongo is an author of several books, including What Died When We Lived (2025); Living with ‘Others’ (2025); What I Saw When I Died (2022); Quarantined (2021, 2025); Uncomfortable Laughter (2020); and Inquiry into a Withering Heritage (2010). He has also edited three scholarly book volumes and published several journal articles and book
chapters.
He has been an Editorial Cartoonist and columnist for The Observer newspaper since 2006 and is actively engaged in social justice advocacy, earning multiple national and global awards in recognition of his activism. With his wealth of academic knowledge and extensive leadership experience, Dr. Ssentongo brings critical thinking, strategic insight, and a strong ethical perspective to the LEMU Board, supporting evidence-based decision-making and strengthening governance.
Karen Lilian Naluyimbazi Atamba is a seasoned finance executive and board-level advisor with over a decade of experience in corporate finance, strategic planning, and organizational transformation across East Africa. She currently serves as Chief Financial Officer at Biyinzika Poultry International Limited, one of Uganda’s leading agribusinesses, where she oversees finance, treasury, performance management, and enterprise systems.
Karen has led large-scale digital transformation initiatives, including ERP implementations, Power BI analytics, and business process automation, strengthening financial governance, operational efficiency, and data-driven decision-making across local and cross-border operations.
Passionate about building resilient institutions, she champions strong financial controls, transparent reporting, and people development. Beyond her corporate role, Karen actively supports entrepreneurship, SME growth, and nonprofit initiatives focused on land equity and community empowerment, contributing strategic oversight in governance and sustainability.
She brings a practical, results-oriented leadership style to every board engagement, combining technical depth with a strong commitment to inclusive development and lasting social impact.
